First Birthday Outfit Checklist: Fit, Photos, Cake and Weather
Short answer: before a first birthday, check six things: the outfit fits now, the child can sit and move comfortably, the weather plan works, the outfit photographs as expected, you know what will happen during cake, and you have a simple backup if needed.

1. Check the size before the event
Do not leave the first try-on until the birthday. Compare the child's measurements with the product chart, then check the complete outfit at home. Age labels are only a starting point.
For measurement help, read How to Measure a Baby or Toddler for Clothes Bought Online.
2. Test movement
Have the child sit, crawl, stand or walk as appropriate. A beautiful outfit that restricts movement can become uncomfortable during a long party.
3. Decide the photo plan
Photograph the complete look in natural light before the event. This helps you see whether a collar, cardigan or accessory is competing with the outfit.

4. Plan for cake
Decide whether the main outfit will also be used for cake-smash photos. If you want to protect detailed embroidery or lace, a second simpler outfit can be practical. Read Cake Smash Outfit vs Party Outfit.
5. Plan for the actual weather
A removable cardigan gives flexibility in cooler weather, while summer events may need minimal layering. Do not build the entire look around a seasonal assumption without checking the venue.
6. Pack a simple backup
A spill or diaper change can make a backup useful. It does not need to be another special outfit; a comfortable familiar piece is enough.

Frequently asked questions
When should I try on the birthday outfit?
Before the event, with enough time to notice fit or layering problems.
Do I need a backup birthday outfit?
It is not required, but a simple backup can be useful for spills or discomfort.
Should the photo outfit be the cake outfit?
It can be. A separate cake outfit is only useful if you want to protect the main look.
