What Size Should You Buy for a 1-Year-Old Girl?

What Size Should You Buy for a 1-Year-Old Girl?

Short answer: do not choose a one-year-old girl's clothing size from age alone. Compare her current height or body measurements with the exact product chart and consider when the item will be worn. Two children who are both one can need different sizes.

Why “1 year old” is not one size

Children grow at different rates and brands use different pattern blocks. Labels such as 12–18M and 18–24M are useful starting points, not universal measurements.

Start with height

Height is often the most useful first comparison. If the product chart provides garment measurements instead of recommended body measurements, compare them with a similar garment that already fits.

Then check chest, length and sleeve

For cardigans, sleeve and chest room matter. For dresses and rompers, body length can change both comfort and appearance. Our How to Measure a Baby or Toddler for Clothes Bought Online guide explains each measurement.

Use the exact product chart for the garment you are buying rather than transferring a size from a different style.

What if the birthday is months away?

Consider the intended wear date, but do not automatically jump several sizes. Too much extra room can change sleeve length, proportions and mobility. Use current growth information together with the chart.

What if you are buying a gift?

Ask for height or a current well-fitting size when possible. If you cannot, choose a size-free gift or read How to Choose Baby Clothing Size as a Gift.

12–18M or 18–24M?

There is no correct answer based only on a first birthday. Compare the child's measurements with the specific product. If she sits between sizes, consider garment shape, intended layering and wear date.

For a milestone outfit, try it on before the event and check sitting, crawling or walking comfort. Our First Birthday Outfit Checklist covers the rest of the preparation.

Frequently asked questions

Does every one-year-old wear 12–18M?

No. Age labels are approximate and fit varies by child and product.

Should I always buy 18–24M for a first birthday so it lasts longer?

No. A larger size can affect fit and movement. Use measurements and the intended wear date.

What is the safest gift if I cannot check size?

A size-free gift such as a blanket removes the clothing-size decision entirely.
